Do I really need to exercise?

Thursday, January 8, 2009

In a perfect world exercise wouldn’t be necessary to be healthy. The reality is, however, that exercise is very important to the health of our mind and bodies. Did you know that regular exercise can help prevent or improve heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes, back pain, and osteoporosis? Exercise can also have psychological benefits, like keeping depression and anxiety at bay. When used in conjunction with a healthy diet, exercise can aid in weight loss.

If you’re like I used to be, you hear the word exercise and groan. For the longest time, I refused to accept the fact that eating healthier just wasn’t enough to reach my weight loss goals. Are there people out there who could lose weight without exercise? I’m sure there are; however, most of us have to exercise if we want to see any results within a reasonable amount of time.

A lot of people associate “exercise” with “working out”, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Exercise is more than walking/running on a treadmill. It can be walking your dog around the neighborhood, playing chase with your kids, playing basketball with a group of friends, or riding a bike through the park. It can be as fun as you want it to be. The main thing is to make a commitment to be more active, and follow through with it. It will make you feel good, and help speed up your weight loss.
